Happy Weekend!
Math
What is a pattern? It is something arranged following a rule. We will be looking at shape and number patterns. Some repeat and grow following a rule. In a repeating shape pattern, the part that repeats is called the CORE.

We describe a shape patterns by its ATTRIBUTES. We identified four different attributes that can change in a shape pattern:
COLOUR, SHAPE, SIZE and ORIENTATION (direction).

Look at the following shape patterns:

How are the attributes in each core changing?
For example in a) the attributes that are changing are size and colour.
How does size change?
Big, big, small, small, repeat
How does colour change?
white, white, grey, grey, repeat?
How can you describe the pattern?
Big white circle, big white circle, small grey circle, small grey circle, repeat
Try b) and c) Remember the shape is a rhombus not a diamond.

Have you ever heard of a phone tree? How does it work?
In the phone tree below, grade five students are letting each other know that school is cancelled because of a snow day. How many students will know in the next round of phone calls? What about the fifth round of phone calls?
If each phone call takes two minutes, how long will five round of phone calls take?

PLEASE GO ON MATHLETICS AND COMPLETE "GETTING STARTED" FOR PATTERNS.
Family Life
On Friday we discussed how we need other people to help us grow in mind, body and spirit. Who are the people who help you grow in each of those areas?
Parents, please click the link below to find some ways to discuss Topic 4 at home.

If you are able to bring in a rolling pin, we will be using it on TUESDAY.

What an awesome visit from Kevin Sylvester. Did you tell your parents the funny story about the pitcher ironing his shirt? Check out his website from the last post and of course check out some of his books at the library!
