Math
Today we talked about number patterns. Grade fives studied number patterns in tables and grade four different types of number patterns.

Grade 4:
Create each type of number pattern:

  • increases by the same amount
  • increases by different amounts
  • decreases by the same amount
  • decreases by different amounts
  • repeats

It is important that you write a pattern rule to fit your number pattern. Pattern rules are written using this format:

Start at ____________ and ______________ by _________ each time.

If your pattern is changing by different amounts such as the number pattern below...

1, 2, 4, 7, 11, 16, 22

your pattern rule would be: start at 1, increase by 1 then increase by one more each time.

The first step you must do before extending a number pattern or writing the pattern rule is FIND THE GAPS between numbers. Find the gap at least 3 to 4 times to make sure you have the correct pattern rule.

Grade 5:
Today we set up recipe tables. Your number patterns were in the table. Extra practice:

Please make sure you do the extra practice questions from Nelson using the above links. You can do the questions from both grades. Nothing wrong with reviewing or challenging yourself!

Literacy
About half the class has completed their idiom poster. Remember to follow success criteria or examples closely before submitting your poster for review.

Science
Canada is a country rich in minerals. Over half of Canada is covered in Canadian Shield which is rich in minerals DEPOSITS. Mining is a VERY important natural resource in Canada. Please choose a mineral (metallic or non-metallic) to research. Choose one that is mined in Canada .... we mine over 60 so there are lots to choose from!

The link below shows some of the minerals that are mined in Canada. It's a little confusing so you may need to ask for help. You can also choose a mineral and then search to see if it is mined in Canada. Remember websites that end in .gc or .gov  or .org are more reliable.
