Grade 4 question:
Understand:
I know that the two things that are changing are the distance and the time. The total distance she runs is 10 km but she doesn't run each kilometre in the same amount of time which makes sense because she's getting tired. It takes her 1 minute longer each kilometre, so that's a growing number pattern.
So the first kilometre is 5min then 6min, 7min, 8min 9 min and so on.
The total time is increasing by +6, +7, +8, +9 and so on.

Plan:
I know that when two things are changing, a good strategy would be to draw a t-chart. Distance and time are changing so they will the headings of my t-chart.

Solve:

Distance (km)
Total Time (min)
1
5
2
11
3
18
4
26
5
35
6
45
7
56
8
68
9
81
10
95
It took Kelly 95 minutes to run the race.

Check:
Does 95 minutes make sense? Well, if she ran each kilometre in 5 minutes it would take her 5 x 10 = 50 minutes, so I know my answer has to be greater than 50 minutes. My answer makes sense.

Grade 5 questions:

Understand:
There are two parts to this problem. In the first part I have to create a number pattern that increases by the same amount. The second part is to the find the sum of all the numbers.

Plan:
I'm going to start my pattern at 10 and increase by 2 each time.
I could start at any number and increase by 1 or 2 or 5 or whatever.
I know that the strategy to find the sum is adding first and last and multiplying by the number of pairs.

Solve:

10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48

Sum of pairs = first + last = 10 + 48 = 58

There are 10 pairs in 20 numbers

The total sum = 58 x 10 = 580

Check:
I can take a calculator and add all the numbers to make sure I'm correct. I did and found a sum of 580.

Try this using your OWN number pattern.
