Mental math continues to be the biggest challenge in this unit. Try these questions. Find the answer using three different strategies. Check if your strategy is correct by adding or subtracting using pencil and paper method. Remember the properties of addition and subtraction. For addition you can decompose a number and add the decomposed parts in any order. That's why "give and take" is the strategy for addition. For subtraction you cannot. That's why to keep the difference between the numbers the same, you have to "give, give" or "take, take".
When you are subtracting, you want the number you are subtracting (second number) to be a magic 10 or friendly number.
Most students are able to add and subtract four-digit numbers. I think a lot of you forgot the other way we can add four-digit numbers:
4628
+3756
7000
1300
70
14
8384
Try a few of these addition problems using this method:
We talked about using a different method of subtracting across zeros. It uses a property of subtractions (take1, take 1).
3000 (-1) 2999
- 1894 (-1) 1893
1106
The advantage of using this method, is no regrouping.
Try these:
Using addition to check subtraction confused SO MANY students. Remember, addition can undo subtraction and subtraction can undo addition. They are opposite operations. So if...
12 - 8 = 4 I would check my answer using addition 8 + 4 = 12. If I do not get the number I subtracted from (first number) I've made a mistake.
Subtract. Then use addition to check your answer.
Lastly, subtraction across zero using pencil and paper method (regrouping) was also a skill we need to work on. Remember, if we cannot regroup from the place value to the left, we must go to the next place value to the left.
Try these. Use addition to check your answer.
Student Led Conferences:
Congratulations on doing a wonderful job. You were honest and shared your work very proudly with your parent(s). All twenty student led conferences were a huge success. Don't forget about the goals you set with your parent(s).
Mass
Congratulations again for doing an excellent job leading the mass on Friday. Everyone behaved reverently and presented his/her part perfectly. BRAVO! Commemorate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, by saying a Hail Mary sometime today.
