Some students have completed the first draft of their persuasive letter. We will be revising, editing and publishing this week.
Math
On Friday we constructed pictographs. Pictographs are a great way to visually show data. Remember to choose a scale and symbol that can be divided easily by 2 for grade four and 4 for grade five. Make sure your symbols are lined up and drawn identically. You don't want to draw too many symbols so don't choose a scale that is too small. The smaller the scale the more the symbols. The larger the scale the less symbols you need to draw.
Draw conclusions from this pictograph:
This one is more challenging. You may use a calculator.
Reading
Make sure you re-read the stories from "What a Story!" in the Nelson Literacy text. Find the main idea (message) of each story. What are the most important things that happen in each story (summarize)? What connection can you make to the feelings and problems of the characters in the stories?
Breakdown of test:
- Summary of one story or part of a story
- Main idea of one story
- Connection to one story
- Multiple choice comprehension, vocabulary, punctuation or grammar. For example I could ask you for a synonym for challenging word, the part of speech of a word (noun, verb, adjective, adverb), the use of punctuation mark (exclamation mark, quotation marks, apostrophe).
- Short answer using part of the question in your answer
- APE using proof from the text and your own ideas to explain your answer or inference
These questions use all the reading strategies we have studied this term. Use the anchor charts posted in the class to help if your still not sure how to answer questions. You may use your textbook but may not use your notebook.
Art
Great job making your ornaments. If you'd like to make a another ornament bring a twig about 15 cm long. This is optional so you don't have to bring a twig.
Reminders
- Skating on Friday at Kinsman Arena. Any parents that are available to skate or to help tying skates we would greatly appreciate your help.
- Secret Santa gift exchange is on Wednesday. Make sure you have a little something to give your chosen classmate.
- Craft day on Thursday. You must have your baby food jar to make your "Elf on a Shelf". If any parents are available to help with the craft on Thursday morning, please let me know.
