Today we talked about different ways families show love. What was the main idea of the lesson?
There are many signs of f _ _ _ _ _ l _ _ _ _ . They happen so o _ _ _ _ that sometimes we don't
n _ t _ _ _ them.
Math
A few students did not submit Mid-Chapter Review. Please ensure it is finished by MONDAY.
Some of you are still not sure what it means to explain if an answer is reasonable. For example:
There are 4874 fiction books in the library and 2379 non-fiction books. How many fiction and non-fiction books are there in the library?
Understand: I know that the problem is asking the total number of books in the library so I have to add.
Plan: I'm going to use a pencil and paper method (line up place values and add from left to right) because the numbers are large and neither number is close to a friendly number like 1000. You can also use adding with regrouping from right to left. Any method is fine as long as you get the correct answer!
Solve:
4874 fiction books
+ 2379 non-fiction books
6000
1100
140
13
7253
There are 7253 fiction and non-fiction books in the library.
Check: Is my answer reasonable?
I will use estimation to check if my answer makes sense (reasonable).
4874 is about 5000 and 2379 is about 2000. 5000 + 2000 is 7000.
My estimate of 7000 is close to my calculated answer of 7253 so my answer makes sense.
More practice questions...
Because we have not discussed multiplication and division strategies, you may use a calculator for problems below that you must multiply or divide to find the solution.

How many more concerts did Jane go to?

Lastly, here are the MENTAL MATH games we played in class on Friday (if you have a plastic sleeve and dry erase marker, you can play it over and over again for hours of family entertainment):
Reminders:

Just wanted to share with you....
Three different teachers made the following comment about all of you....
"Mrs. Hollis, you have the nicest class!"
Of course I responded, "I know. They're my fantastic 4/5!"
