Math
On Friday we began talking about the different ways we can show multiplication.
For the fact 7 x 3 = 21

Multiplication is repeated addition:

7 + 7 + 7 = 21
or
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 21

Multiplication is equal groups:

or

Multiplication is skip counting:

7, 14, 21 (skip counting by 7 three times)
 or

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21(skip counting by 3 seven times)

Multiplication is an array:

XXXXXXX  (3 rows of 7)
XXXXXXX
XXXXXXX

or

XXX  (7 rows of 3)
XXX
XXX
XXX
XXX
XXX
XXX

Express 6 x 3 = 18 four different ways.

You must practice your times table. Start with the 5 times table. At first counting by 5 is easy, but eventually the fact should be automatic.

Some hints to remember....
Multiplying by 2 is just doubling.
Multiplying by 4 is just double x 2

For example 6 x 4 is double 6 x 2 = 12 so it is 24
If you know your doubles, you can get the four times table.

If you know your four times table you can get you 8 times table (double 4)

6 x 2 = 12 so 6 x 4 = 24 (double 12) so 6 x 8 = 48 (double 24)

Number reasoning skills can be used to recall a fact in the beginning. Try to use a reasoning skill instead of just skip counting (which takes too long).

Watch some of the videos to help you recall facts (just keep clicking for the next times table):

The test on Tuesday:
  • estimating, adding, subtracting money and finding change
  • using different strategies such as making an easier question using addition and subtraction mental strategies and using a number line
  • some questions will involve two steps
Please review questions from your green math notebook and from your handout. Go over questions you did incorrectly.

Practice Questions:

Literacy
More spelling rules:
  • Double the final consonant when adding a suffix (e.g. -ed or -ing) to a word ending with a consonant, vowel, consonant (short vowel sound).
  • Drop the silent e when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel (e.g. -ed or -ing).
  • Do not drop the silent e when adding a suffix that begins with a consonant (e.g. less or ful)
  • Change the y to i and add es to words ending with a consonant + y
As with all spelling rules...... there are always exceptions!
Good spellings are avid readers..... read more to become a better speller.

Family Life
What are your family responsibilities? In this lesson we talked about different responsibilities and how our responsibilities may change because of changed circumstances at home such as a new job, moving, a sick family member or an  injured family member. Please complete your handout.

Art
Set a goal next week to complete your Ted Harrison art. Those that are completed, will be displayed in the front foyer. They are magnificent!

Shrove Tuesday
On Tuesday morning we will be celebrating Shrove Tuesday. In honour of this special day, two pancakes will be made for each student. Syrup will be provided. Pancakes should be ready when students arrive. There is no cost.
