Math
Our number talk today built on what we discussed yesterday. We can decompose a number to make a magic ten or friendly number.

When we DECOMPOSE a number we break into into parts.

For example:
27 + 6 = ?
If we decompose 6 into 3 + 3 we can use one 3 and add it to the 27 to make a magic ten of 30. So.... 27 + 6 = 30 + 3 = 33

Remember this is mental math so you are doing all these calculations in your head.
Try these:
58 + 7
43 + 9
26 + 8

Don't forget there is always different strategies to solve the same question!

Today we began our first math unit on Place Value. Grade fours are expected to be able to express numbers in different ways to 10 000 and grade fives to 100 000.

We used base-ten blocks to show a number visually. We also found out that there are many ways to use the base-ten blocks to show a number. The easiest way is using the lease number of blocks.

We can say that 683 is 6 hundreds, 8 tens, 3 ones

But we can also say that 683 is 683 ones or 68 tens and 3 ones or 67 tens and 13 ones.
The combinations are many, but you must remember that is a base-ten system. There are: 10 ones in ten, ten tens in 100, ten hundreds in 1000, ten thousands in 10 000.
Think about these questions:
How many tens in 1000?
How many tens in 10 000
How many hundreds in 1000?
How man hundreds in 10 000?

Literacy
Today we discussed our second before (and during) reading strategy. Do you remember what it was? Why is it important to do this?

We had some very creative stretchy sentences. Here is one with strong verbs and good descriptive language:
The weary girl panted heavily on the emerald green soccer field after an exhausting cross country run.

Religion
Think about he symbols you'd like to design on your pendant. Make sure they represent you or are important to you.

Reminders:
Many forms came home today. The student permission form (yellow) and student verification sheet (white) are very important. Please return them as soon as possible as well as $10.00 for the agenda.
