More review today and more review on Monday. Toward the end of the week we'll use all of our knowledge to solve problems. The true test of whether or not we can apply everything we learned throughout the unit.
Here are some practice problems:
Nicholas puts some markers around a running track. He puts the first marker at 100m. Then we puts a marker every 50m. How many markers does he need to reach 400m?
UNDERSTAND....
Think about the question logically before you start. Will a picture help you visualize or see what Nick is doing? What do you know about a track? What does it look like?
Use reasoning to estimate. In my head I'm thinking....
"Well, if it's 400m and Nick puts down a marker every 100m, then he'd put down 4 markers because there are 4 groups of 100 in 400 (4 x 100 = 400). But he's putting the markers down every 50m after 100m so my answer must be more than 4."
PLAN...
"In class we solved measurement problems using a t-chart, so maybe I'll try that."
SOLVE..

CHECK...
Does this make sense? In my head I'm thinking, "When I estimated at the beginning I knew Nick would need more than 4 markers and I got 7 markers, so that make sense. If Nick put them down every 50m after the first 100m, then 7 makes even more sense because 7 is about double 4 and 100m is double 50m so that's twice as many markers."
Now try these ones...
Sophie is training for 5 km or 5000m race. She wants to slowly work her way up to running 5000m without injuring herself. She measured a 5 km route in her neighbourhood. The first night she runs, she puts an X on the sidewalk (with chalk) when she reaches 1000m then walks the rest of the 5000 m. Every day after that she puts an X on the sidewalk 500m past the X from before. How many days does it take Sophie to run 5000m without stopping?
Ellen is baking a chocolate cookies. The recipe requires 250 mL of sugar, 125 mL of brown sugar, 625 mL of flour, 500 mL of chocolate chips, 2 eggs and 5 mL of baking soda to make 24 cookies. She would like to make enough for all the kindergarten and junior kindergarten students and our class which is a total of 92 students. Don't worry, she'll also have a package of Oreo cookies for students with nut allergies. How much of each ingredient will she need to feed all of those cookie loving students?
Literacy
Some wonderful connections to "Jenny Taylor's Challenge". Remember while you are reading you should be thinking "Hey, that part reminded me of when..... so I bet the character was feeling... just like me."
Next week we will be wrapping up the story (main idea) and several writing assignments (Buddy paragraphs and rock or mineral research).
Drama
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair..... Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin! " Loads of fun performing in our Drama Circle on Friday.
Reminders:
- If you have not finished your time capsule, you must stay at lunch recess to finish. Make sure all objects and materials are at school.
- Complete all of your assignments on Mathletics.
- Return the envelope of your Progress Report signed. All interview sheets went home Friday.
- In-Motion calendars are due. They must be submitted on Monday.
