Math
Please keep practicing your multiplication facts. Many students are having difficulty with multi-digit multiplication and long division because they do not know the multiplication facts. We have discussed MANY, MANY tricks and many of you have come up with your own tricks to recall difficult facts. Your hard work learning your times table today, will help you tremendously in the future.

I noticed some students had problems finding the volume of the rectangular prism and drawing the prism from above. We will revisit prisms in a few weeks when we study 3-D shapes. If you remember that Volume = Area x Height, you should be able to find different prisms with the same volume.
For example, a rectangular prism has a length of 4 cm, a width of 2 cm and a height of 3 cm. What is the volume? Draw the prism from above.

Volume = Length x Width x Height
             = 4 cm x 2 cm x 3 cm
             = 8 square centimetres x 3 cm
             = 24 cubic centimetres

Draw the rectangle with a length and width of 4 cm and 2 cm (area 8 square centimetres). The height is 3 cm so that goes inside the squares.

Now think of 3 other numbers that multiply to give you 24.... 6 (length) x 2 (width) x 2 (height)

Writing
Your goal is to finish writing your first draft of your wordless picture book by THURSDAY. We want to begin publishing your book before the end of May. Please try to bring a memory stick to school.
We are having difficulty printing from the laptops. Many of you have non-fiction paragraphs ready to print out on an organ of the body. My desktop is the only computer we seem to be able to print from.

Science
Don't forget to bring your cardboard for Wednesday. Remember not too thick because we have to use scissors to cut out the bones in the arm.

We will be having our last Science test on Friday on the Circulatory System. For the test you should be able to:

  • label the chambers of the heart
  • draw arrows to show the blood flow through the heart (to lungs, from lungs)
  • follow a drop of blood from the lungs, through the heart, to the body, back to the heart and finally back to the lungs and know what is happening i.e. oxygen given, oxygen picked up, carbon dioxide given, carbon dioxide picked up
  • understand how exercise effects your heart rate and how to conduct an investigation to show this
  • the main parts of the blood and their jobs
  • 3 ways to keep your circulatory system healthy and WHY
First few pages of link have interesting information. The last page has lifestyle tips.

Social Studies
Grade 5, feel free to work on your mind maps. REMEMBER ONLY IMPORTANT WORDS and drawings to support words.

Art
Amazing job creating your Japanese "Notan" art. Do you remember what "notan" means?
Remember for those student not finished, keep your designs simple.
Do you remember what transformation we applied to create our art? If you don't, we'll be talking about it on Tuesday!

For the students who were away on Friday, watch the video of our art lesson:

Reminders:

  • Bring a GLUE STICK and DRY ERASE MARKER
  • Permission form and money for Track and Field
  • Keep practicing the dance. I can tell who has practiced. Dance is a mark on your report card!
  • Cardboard for Science
